Paintings by Anne
Bradford and Philip Buller
May 23rd through July 25th - Paintings by
Anne Bradford and Philip Buller. Several new landscapes of the surrounding
countryside by Bradford are presented in this show. Images from the
vineyards and country lane where the artist lives are depicted in
oil on canvas. Also included in this selection are views of the
nearby Russian River. Philip Buller is known for representational
paintings that transcend literal narratives through their ambiguity
of historic time, suggestion of universal themes and overriding
intensity of feeling. In this current body of work, figures are
depicted in vaguely described locations, wearing clothing that is
generalized and suggestive of a pre-industrial or foreign
culture. He states, " At this time my painting
involves representation of the human figure. My intention is to
follow threads of sensation and feeling to create paintings to
which I have as deep an emotional response as possible. To guide me
toward intensity of feeling I use composition (the abstract
relationship of shapes) rather than narrative, as the primary
vehicle. In this way I feel I am able to uncover meaning from an
unconscious place. This particular process offers mystery,
ambiguity, and ultimately the chance for
transformation." |
